New AI-powered tool gives detailed, context-rich answers directly in search results
New Delhi: Google has officially launched its new AI Mode in Search for users across India. This advanced feature lets users ask complex or layered questions and get detailed answers directly in the search results—without needing to click through multiple links.
After a trial run via Search Labs in June, the feature is now gradually rolling out to all users in English on both desktop and mobile.
What is AI Mode?
Unlike traditional search, which provides a list of website links, AI Mode uses artificial intelligence to deliver a complete answer to your question. It breaks down multi-part queries, gathers information from various web sources, and then presents a clean, summarised response—often with links, images, and follow-up prompts.
The system runs on a version of Google’s Gemini 2.5 model, which helps it understand and break down complex questions.
How to use AI Mode
Users will see a new “AI Mode” tab in their search results and in the Google app’s search bar.
You can:
Type your question
Speak it using voice input
Upload images using Google Lens
For example, you could take a photo of a plant and ask how to care for it. The AI Mode will identify the plant, explain its care routine, and link to useful resources.
Ideal for deeper searches
Google says AI Mode is perfect for long-form, exploratory searches—like planning trips, comparing products, or understanding technical topics.
Early users are already asking questions 2–3 times longer than usual, looking for advice, explanations, and in-depth guidance.
It uses a method called “query fan-out”, which splits a query into smaller parts, runs multiple searches, and then compiles one helpful answer.
Current limitations
For now, AI Mode is only available in English.
Google plans to support more Indian languages soon.
If the system lacks confidence in its response, traditional search results will be shown instead.
Gradual rollout
The AI Mode is being rolled out in phases and will be available to more users over the coming days. Google emphasized that the tool is still experimental, but it marks a major leap in how search can understand and help users.
