Ahmedabad: In a rare and personal reflection, Union Home Minister Amit Shah opened up about his post-retirement plans, revealing a desire to spend his life studying the Vedas and Upanishads, and practising natural farming.
The 60-year-old BJP leader, known for his relentless political work, shared these thoughts while addressing women and cooperative activists from Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh during the ‘Sahkar Samvaad’ event in Ahmedabad.
A Life Beyond Politics
“After retirement, I have decided to dedicate my life to the Vedas, Upanishads, and natural farming,” Shah said.
While he did not explain how he would study the Hindu scriptures, Shah spoke extensively about his commitment to natural farming.
On Health and Chemicals in Food
Shah raised concerns about the health risks linked to chemically-grown food:
“Wheat grown with chemical fertilisers can lead to cancer, high BP, diabetes, and thyroid problems.”
He claimed that avoiding chemically-treated food could reduce dependence on medicines.
Shah’s Own Experience with Natural Farming
“I’ve been doing natural farming on my farm. Yields are 1.5 times higher, and the soil quality has improved.”
He praised natural farming not just for better crops but also for ecological benefits.
“With organic farming, water doesn’t run off during rain. It seeps into the soil, restoring catchways that fertilisers have destroyed.”
Earthworms: Nature’s Fertiliser Factories
Shah lamented how synthetic fertilisers have wiped out earthworms.
“Earthworms are nature’s own urea and DAP factories. We’ve killed them with excessive use of chemicals.”
Emotional Connect with Cooperation Ministry
Reflecting on his role as Minister of Cooperation, Shah said:
“People thought the Home Ministry was my biggest responsibility. But for me, the Cooperation Ministry is closer to my heart because it works for farmers, poor, villages, and animals.”
Voices from the Field
The event also featured stories from women cooperative workers, highlighting the impact of cooperatives in rural communities.
