Smart, green, and future-ready — Odisha’s big urban leap begins with a 426-acre city plan
Cuttack/ Odisha: The Odisha government is planning a bold new urban project — New Cuttack City — to be developed on 426 acres of reclaimed riverfront land along the banks of the Mahanadi River. This new city is part of a larger push to transform the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Puri-Paradip Economic Region (BCPPER) into a modern, globally competitive urban-industrial corridor.
The vision for New Cuttack is a smart city and ecological hub, designed to combine modern urban infrastructure with sustainable environmental practices. It will feature a world-class eco-park, rejuvenation centres, research labs, sports facilities, and tourism infrastructure.
New Cuttack will differ from conventional city expansions. It is being modelled as a next-generation smart city similar to GIFT City in Gujarat, with a focus on emerging sectors like eco-tourism, wellness, sports science, and advanced research. The project also promises recreational and public spaces for local communities.
The city’s blueprint includes smart mobility corridors, walkable green waterfronts, and open urban landscapes. The project is being shaped under the state’s Vision 2036 and 2047 plans, which aim to build cities that are both people-centric and ecologically resilient.
This initiative is a key element in Odisha’s ambitious $500 billion economic vision, which aims to scale the state’s economy from $22 billion to $500 billion in the coming years.
The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Puri-Paradip belt will be the core of this transformation. The state plans to turn this belt into a powerful economic zone focused on medical tourism, industrial growth, logistics, and high-skill services.
Other major projects in the pipeline include a 2,500-acre aerotropolis in Puri, a 200-acre Medi-City in Cuttack, and a 5,000-acre industrial township between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
With New Cuttack as the flagship, Odisha is betting big on green growth, urban innovation, and a globally connected future.
