Bhubaneswar: A major road infrastructure boost is on its way for Odisha. The Government of India is all set to approve the 110-km six-lane Capital Region Ring Road, also known as the Bhubaneswar Bypass, at a cost of Rs 8,300 crore.
The project will connect Khordha, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack through a greenfield access-controlled expressway.
Once completed, this modern corridor will cut highway travel time between the three cities by about 40 minutes—from 120 to nearly 80 minutes.
The initiative aims to ease traffic congestion and support the smooth flow of goods and commuters across the state’s capital region.
The Odisha government has agreed to share 50% of the land acquisition costs as per central guidelines. The total land cost is estimated at Rs 1,029 crore.
The expressway will be built in three segments, allowing better coordination and faster work.
The 110-km road will feature:
6 interchanges
4 elevated stretches
5 major and 44 minor bridges
3 railway overbridges
17 vehicle underpasses
The project will be constructed using the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). Under this model, the contractor bears part of the financial risk, builds the road within 2.5 years, and maintains it for 15 years after completion.
Officials say this model will speed up work while ensuring high-quality infrastructure maintenance.
With its advanced engineering, time-bound execution, and mixed funding, the Bhubaneswar Bypass is expected to become a benchmark for infrastructure projects in Odisha and beyond.
