New Delhi: In a major move to boost passenger safety, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has approved the installation of CCTV cameras in all 74,000 railway coaches across the country. This nationwide upgrade will also include 15,000 locomotives, railway officials confirmed on Sunday.
The decision comes after successful trials of CCTV systems in Northern Railway coaches and locomotives. Based on positive results, Vaishnaw gave the green signal during a review meeting held on Saturday, attended by Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu and senior Railway Board officials.
Each coach will now be equipped with four dome-type CCTV cameras — two at each entry point. In locomotives, six cameras will be installed, covering the front, rear, sides, and both cabs. Additionally, desk-mounted microphones will be placed in cabs to further enhance surveillance.
The Railway Minister emphasized the need for high-quality video footage, even at speeds exceeding 100 kmph and under low-light conditions. He also asked officials to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in analyzing the video data, potentially in collaboration with the IndiaAI Mission.
The cameras will be strategically placed in common movement areas near coach doors, ensuring maximum coverage without compromising passenger privacy. Officials noted this would deter miscreants and organised criminal gangs that often target vulnerable passengers.
This CCTV expansion reflects Indian Railways’ ongoing commitment to modernisation and passenger security. With safety measures like these, officials say passengers can expect a more secure and reliable travel experience across India’s vast railway network.
