Alleges Party Insiders Behind Morphed Photo, Demands Police Investigation
Kolkata: Former Trinamool Congress student leader Rajanya Haldar has filed an official complaint with the Kolkata Police after an alleged AI-generated deepfake image of her was circulated among party members. The semi-nude morphed photo, according to her, was deliberately created and shared to defame her.
In a strongly worded post on Facebook, Rajanya said,
“Today, I have lodged an official complaint with the police. Many are blaming me, saying the picture is mine and that I’m now doing drama to cover up my sins. Let the law take its course.”
She alleged that junior members of the party were involved in the distortion and circulation of the fake image. Rajanya added in her complaint that she was aware of the people behind the act, and was prepared to name the suspects—both those she is sure of and those named to her “in whispers.”
She has urged the police to conduct a forensic analysis and confirm whether the image was morphed.
“I want the police to issue a clear report on whether the image is real or manipulated,” she wrote.
This disturbing development comes just days after Rajanya appeared on a local TV channel, where she strongly condemned the gangrape of a first-year law student in Kolkata. During the show, she criticized the misogynistic culture within certain sections of student politics—remarks widely seen as a veiled attack on Monojit Mishra, the prime accused in the case and also a former TMC student leader.
Rajanya has been a controversial figure within the party. She was suspended in 2023 after appearing in a short film that bore similarities to a real-life rape and murder case involving a student from RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.
The incident has once again raised serious questions about online harassment, digital safety, and the use of AI-generated deepfakes to target women in politics. Activists and cybercrime experts have called for swift police action and stronger digital laws to curb such offenses.
As the investigation begins, all eyes are on the Kolkata Police to verify the authenticity of the image and take action against those responsible for the character assassination of a young woman leader.
