Binika, Subarnapur (Odisha): In a rare and exciting event, local fishermen in Binika town caught a giant fish weighing nearly 100 kilograms from the Mahanadi River on Thursday. The massive catch drew a large crowd and created a wave of excitement in the area.
The fish, identified as a Goonch catfish—locally known as Bodha fish—measured around six feet in length. It was caught by three fishermen near Binikapada in Subarnapur district.
Residents rushed to the riverbank to see the giant fish. Many said they had never seen such a large fish before.
“This is the first time we have caught such a big fish. Earlier, we only got Bodha fish weighing 30 to 40 kilos,” said Anantaram Muduli, one of the fishermen.
The fish is not just big in size—it is also believed to have medicinal properties. Due to its therapeutic value, it is sold in the local market at Rs 300 per kilogram.
Locals said the fish was likely from the deeper waters of the Mahanadi. Its capture has brought attention to the rich biodiversity of the river, which supports both nature and livelihoods.
The giant catch has become the talk of the town. Many hope that the river continues to provide such valuable and rare fish in the future.
