New Delhi/United Nations: India on Saturday strongly rejected Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s claim of “victory” in the May 7–10 conflict. Speaking at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), India said the evidence from Operation Sindoor showed a very different reality.
Petal Gahlot, First Secretary at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, exercised India’s right of reply. She said images of destroyed Pakistani air bases, runways, and terror camps exposed the truth.
“If destroyed runways and burnt-out hangars look like victory, Pakistan is welcome to enjoy it,” Gahlot told the UNGA.
Pakistan’s claims dismissed
Sharif had earlier told the Assembly that Pakistan had “won the war” and downed seven Indian jets. He also sought dialogue with India. Gahlot called his account “bizarre” and “absurd theatrics.”
She said Pakistan pleaded for a ceasefire by May 10 after suffering heavy losses. India had acted in response to a terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, which killed 26 civilians.
Evidence of strikes
India presented photographic proof of strikes on terror hubs in Bahawalpur and Muridke. Gahlot said pictures showed slain terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
“Pakistan glorifies these terrorists. This shows the true nature of its regime,” she said.
Operation Sindoor
The Indian Air Force and Army launched Operation Sindoor on May 7. High-resolution images later showed major damage to Pakistani military infrastructure.
* Nur Khan airbase in Rawalpindi was engulfed in flames.
* Rahim Yar Khan airbase runway was destroyed.
* Radar sites, ammunition depots, and command centres were hit.
Over 100 terrorists were killed in strikes on multiple camps. Pakistan’s missile and drone attacks were intercepted and neutralised by India.
India’s message to UNGA
India said peace was possible only if Pakistan shut down terror camps and handed over wanted terrorists. It also reminded the UN that all issues must be settled bilaterally, with no third-party mediation.
Gahlot called it ironic that Pakistan, “wallowing in hate and bigotry,” tried to lecture the world on faith. She urged Islamabad to “look in the mirror.”
