New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign trips over the last five years have cost the Indian government nearly ₹362 crore, the Ministry of External Affairs informed Parliament.
The data was presented in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh, in response to a question raised by TMC MP Derek O’Brien.
From 2021 to 2025, PM Modi undertook 33 official foreign visits, aimed at boosting India’s global partnerships in trade, security, and diplomacy.
In 2025 alone, more than ₹67 crore was spent on five overseas trips, including high-profile visits to France and the United States.
The France visit topped the list of expenses this year, costing over ₹25 crore. The United States trip was the second most expensive, with an expenditure of over ₹16 crore.
Other visits in 2025, including those to Canada for the G7 Summit, Brazil for the BRICS Summit, and Mauritius, were not fully accounted for as their final costs are yet to be settled.
In 2024, the government spent ₹109 crore on foreign trips to 16 countries, including to conflict zones like Russia and Ukraine.
In 2023, Modi’s state visit to the United States—where he met then-President Joe Biden—cost over ₹22 crore.
In 2022, major visits to Germany and Japan incurred expenses of ₹9 crore and ₹8 crore respectively.
The data also highlighted public engagements and promotional spending during these trips.
During his 2023 Egypt visit, ₹11.90 lakh was spent on advertising and publicity.
In France this year, PM Modi had at least nine public engagements, including:
-
Inauguration of the new Indian Embassy in Marseille
-
Visit to the Mazargues War Cemetery
In the US, Modi held bilateral meetings with former President Donald Trump, attended a state dinner, and interacted with American entrepreneurs, including Elon Musk.
These visits, though expensive, are often focused on strategic partnerships, investment promotion, and defence cooperation — all considered key to India’s foreign policy and economic roadmap.
