Hyderabad: In a heartfelt and unexpected announcement, badminton star Saina Nehwal revealed her separation from husband and fellow shuttler Parupalli Kashyap. The couple, who tied the knot in 2018, are parting ways after nearly seven years of marriage and over a decade of companionship.
Saina made the announcement through a brief statement on Instagram late on Sunday night. “Life takes us in different directions sometimes… We’re choosing peace, growth, and healing—for ourselves and each other,” she wrote, requesting privacy during this personal time.
Saina and Parupalli’s story began at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad, where both trained and rose through the ranks of Indian badminton. While Saina became a global icon with her Olympic bronze medal and World No. 1 ranking, Kashyap created his own legacy with a Commonwealth Games gold medal and consistent performances on the international circuit.
Their bond grew stronger over the years, both on and off the court. After retiring from active play, Kashyap turned coach and began mentoring Saina during the later part of her career. From sparring partner to strategic advisor, he was often seen courtside guiding her during matches and tournaments.
In 2019, under Kashyap’s coaching, Saina stunned fans by defeating PV Sindhu at the National Championships. Despite struggling with injuries post-2016, Saina continued her fight, supported by Kashyap’s constant tactical and emotional guidance.
Their journey showcased not only sporting excellence but also a rare and inspiring personal partnership within Indian sports.
Saina last appeared on the professional badminton circuit in June 2023. She has not yet announced her retirement from the sport.
The separation marks the end of a significant chapter in Indian badminton’s modern era.
