Retention Period Ended in May; Letter Sent to Housing Ministry for Immediate Action
New Delhi: The Supreme Court administration has officially written to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, asking for the immediate eviction of Bungalow No. 5, Krishna Menon Marg, currently occupied by former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice DY Chandrachud.
Justice Chandrachud retired on November 10, 2024. As per Rule 3B of the Supreme Court Judges Rules, 2022, a retired Chief Justice can retain official accommodation for up to six months after retirement.
That six-month period expired on May 10, 2025. The government had also granted a special retention permission, which further extended the stay till May 31, 2025. That extension too has now lapsed.
In a letter dated July 1, 2025, a Supreme Court official wrote to the Secretary of the Housing Ministry, urging the ministry to take possession of the bungalow without any further delay.
“I am to request you to take the possession of Bungalow No. 5, Krishna Menon Marg, from Hon’ble Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud… as not only the permission that was granted for retention has expired on 31st May, 2025, but also the period of six months… has expired on 10th May, 2025,” the letter reads.
The bungalow is part of the official Supreme Court housing pool and is now due for reallocation to other eligible judges or officials.
The matter has drawn public attention given Justice Chandrachud’s high-profile role as former Chief Justice and the symbolic value of official government bungalows.
As of now, there is no official statement from Justice Chandrachud regarding the matter. The Housing Ministry is yet to confirm its next steps.
