Bengaluru: Former JDS MP Prajwal Revanna was convicted on Friday by the Special Court for People’s Representatives in a rape case filed by a domestic worker from KR Nagar, Mysuru.
The case was registered just 14 months ago. The trial moved swiftly and concluded within seven months. The court will announce the sentence on Saturday.
Revanna was accused of raping the woman twice and recording videos of the acts. The FIR was filed at the Cyber Crime Station of the CID. The woman submitted a saree as evidence. Forensic tests confirmed the presence of sperm on it. This was accepted as key proof in court.
The CID’s Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Inspector Shobha, collected 123 pieces of evidence. They filed a 2,000-page charge sheet. The trial began on December 31, 2024. The court examined 23 witnesses. It also reviewed forensic reports of the video clips and site inspection details.
Revanna broke down in court after the verdict. He was seen crying as he exited the courtroom.
He was convicted under several sections of the Indian Penal Code. These include IPC Sections 376(2)(k) and 376(2)(n), which carry a minimum sentence of 10 years, and can extend to life. Other sections include 354(A), 354(B), 354(C), 506, and 201. He was also found guilty under Section 66(E) of the IT Act, 2008.
The survivor’s courage and fast-track legal proceedings have drawn wide attention. All eyes are now on the court, which will pronounce the quantum of punishment on Saturday.
