Gorakhpur: In a bold step towards a life of dignity and peace, two women from Uttar Pradesh, fed up with the abusive behavior of their alcoholic husbands, decided to leave their past behind and marry each other. The unconventional wedding took place at the revered Shiva Temple, also known as Choti Kashi, in Deoria on Thursday evening.
Kavita and Gunja, also known as Bablu, found solace in each other after connecting on Instagram. Their shared struggles of domestic violence and emotional distress brought them closer, leading them to take this significant decision.
At the temple, Gunja assumed the role of the groom, applied sindoor (vermillion) on Kavita’s forehead, exchanged garlands, and performed the seven sacred pheras, marking their commitment to a new life together.
“We were tormented by our husbands’ drinking and abusive behavior. This pushed us to choose a life of peace and love. We have decided to live in Gorakhpur as a couple and work to sustain ourselves,” Gunja stated.
The couple now plans to rent a room and start afresh, embracing a future free from violence and oppression.
Temple priest Uma Shankar Pandey confirmed the ceremony, stating that the women had come prepared with garlands and sindoor, performed the necessary rituals, and quietly left.
Their decision reflects a growing desire for personal freedom and the right to live life on one’s own terms, despite societal conventions. Their journey now stands as an inspiring testament to courage, love, and resilience.
