Covid-19 Cases Rise Across Asia; India Reports Mild Uptick and Increases Vigilance

New Delhi: Several Asian countries are seeing a fresh surge in Covid-19 cases. Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, and China have reported rising infections and hospitalisations. In contrast, India is witnessing a mild increase, with only 257 active cases, according to health officials.

Asia Sees a Covid Surge

Over the last few weeks, Covid-19 cases have risen sharply in parts of Asia.

In Singapore, cases grew from 11,100 to 14,200 between April 27 and May 3. Hospital admissions also rose, but ICU cases slightly decreased. Authorities say the hospitals can still manage the load.

Thailand reported 33,030 new cases from May 11 to 17. Of these, 6,000 cases were from Bangkok alone. The rise is being linked to the recent Songkran holiday.

In Hong Kong, the positivity rate jumped from 6.21% to 13.66% in four weeks. Health experts say the city is now seeing repeated waves every six to nine months.

China also recorded a spike. Among patients with flu-like symptoms, the Covid-19 positivity rate rose from 7.5% to 16.2% between March 31 and May 4.

New Variants Fueling the Rise

Singapore’s health authorities say the increase is due to new variants — LF.7 and NB.1.8. Both are descendants of the JN.1 variant.

Experts say immunity is waning in the population. Many people have not had a booster in over a year. This is making high-risk groups more vulnerable.

Seasonal changes, increased travel, and more social gatherings are also contributing to the spike.

India’s Situation Remains Calm

In India, the situation is currently under control. The total number of active Covid-19 cases stands at 257.

Most cases are reported to be mild. There are no signs of increased severity or deaths.

Health officials say they are closely monitoring the situation. A high-level review meeting was held with experts from the NCDC, ICMR, and other health bodies.

A senior official told, “The Health Ministry remains vigilant and proactive. Appropriate steps are being taken to ensure public safety.”

Endemic Status in Some Countries

Hong Kong health authorities have declared Covid-19 an endemic disease. They say the virus now follows a periodic pattern — rising and falling every few months.

Dr. Edwin Tsui from Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection said the waves are linked to changing variants and declining herd immunity.

While Asia battles a new wave of Covid-19, India’s numbers are low for now. Authorities urge citizens to remain cautious and follow basic precautions. Vaccination, especially booster doses for vulnerable groups, remains a key defence against future spikes.
