New Delhi: Google has made an important update to its two-factor authentication (2FA) process. Now, when approving a sign-in request using Google Prompt, users must also verify their identity with a fingerprint, face unlock, or PIN.
What’s Changing?
Previously, Google Prompt only required users to tap “Yes, it’s me” to approve a login. With the new update, an extra step is needed. After tapping yes, users must confirm their identity using their phone’s screen lock.
Why the Change?
This extra layer of security prevents unauthorized access. If someone has your unlocked phone, they won’t be able to approve a login request without your fingerprint or PIN.
How It Works
- The new verification appears as a small pop-up on the phone.
- Users must unlock their phone to confirm the sign-in.
- The original sign-in details remain visible in the background.
Who Gets It?
Android users will receive this update with Google Play services version 25.02.34.
iPhone users will get it through the Google app or Gmail.
The update is rolling out gradually and will reach all users soon.
Other 2FA Options
If you prefer, you can still use passkeys, security keys, or authenticator apps instead of Google Prompt.
While this change adds an extra step, it helps keep accounts safer. Google has used similar security measures for Google Wallet payments before. This update ensures better protection for all users.
