Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has decided to take strict action against its MLAs who have been skipping Assembly sessions without valid reasons.
The party’s Legislative Disciplinary Committee has summoned several lawmakers to explain their absence. They must appear before the committee later this week.
On Monday, state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay held a meeting to review attendance records. Lawmakers are required to sign three registers, which are now being checked to identify absentees.
“There are MLAs who had informed us about their absence. But many were missing without notice. We are compiling a list,” Chattopadhyay said.
The TMC leadership considers repeated absenteeism a serious issue. A senior leader called it an “act of irresponsibility.”
The party had issued a whip asking MLAs to be present on March 19 and 20. However, many were absent even when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was in the House.
On March 20, only about 90 TMC legislators attended the session.
Now, the party is closely monitoring attendance and is set to take firm action against habitual absentees.
