Vande Bharat Express Successfully Completes Trial Run in Jammu & Kashmir

Kashmir: In a significant boost to Jammu and Kashmir’s rail connectivity, the Indian Railways successfully conducted the first trial run of the specially designed Vande Bharat Express train on Saturday. The high-speed train journeyed from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) railway station to Srinagar, marking a historic moment as it passed over the world’s highest rail bridge, the Chenab Bridge, and India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, the Anji Khad Bridge.

The train made a brief halt at Jammu around 11:30 am, where it received a warm welcome from locals and railway officials. Enthusiastic crowds gathered to cheer for the Indian Railways’ latest achievement before the train continued to Budgam station to complete its successful trial run.

A Step Closer to Commercial Operations

Commercial operations of the Vande Bharat Express in Jammu and Kashmir are expected to commence soon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to flag off the inaugural journey from Katra, though the official date for the ceremony is yet to be announced.

Designed for Extreme Conditions

The newly designed Vande Bharat train incorporates advanced features to ensure smooth operations in Jammu and Kashmir’s harsh winter conditions. Compared to other Vande Bharat Express trains running across India, this train boasts:

  • Advanced heating systems to prevent the freezing of water and bio-toilet tanks.
  • Warm air provision for the vacuum system to ensure optimal performance.
  • Enhanced air-brake systems for smooth functioning in sub-zero temperatures.
  • Embedded heating elements in the windshield for automatic defrosting, ensuring clear visibility for drivers even in extreme cold.

In addition to these winter-specific modifications, the train includes all standard Vande Bharat Express amenities, such as fully air-conditioned coaches, automatic plug doors, and mobile charging sockets.

Bridging the Gap: A Step Towards Connectivity

This trial run marks a crucial step in the completion of the 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. This ambitious project aims to integrate the Kashmir Valley with the broader Indian railway network, fostering economic growth and enhancing accessibility for residents and tourists alike.

According to railway officials, this initiative highlights India’s commitment to bridging geographical and economic divides, ensuring better connectivity and development in the region.
