New Delhi: The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has launched a detailed investigation into the alleged misuse of public funds for renovations at former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence.
The CVC has directed the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to examine claims that building norms were violated to construct a luxurious mansion, nicknamed “Sheesh Mahal,” covering 40,000 square yards (8 acres). The probe was ordered on February 13, following a factual report submitted by CPWD.
Complaint by BJP Leader Vijender Gupta
The investigation follows a complaint filed by BJP leader Vijender Gupta on October 14, 2024. Gupta alleged that Kejriwal flouted construction laws to merge multiple government properties, including two bungalows and officers’ residences, into a single grand mansion. The complaint stated that the project violated ground coverage and floor area ratio (FAR) norms and was carried out without proper layout approvals.
On October 16, the CVC registered the complaint and later forwarded it to CPWD in November for examination. The Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of CPWD submitted a factual report to the CVC on December 5, highlighting potential financial irregularities.
Concerns Over Extravagant Spending
Gupta also raised concerns over the excessive costs of the renovation. In his complaint to the Chief Vigilance Commissioner, he claimed that Kejriwal spent crores of taxpayers’ money on luxurious additions, including high-end interiors and extravagant amenities. He argued that the expenditures far exceeded reasonable limits, raising serious corruption concerns.
The allegations include the demolition of existing government housing for senior officers and judges to make way for the new mansion. Gupta emphasized that such large-scale modifications to public properties were unlawful and an abuse of power.
CVC Assures Action
Taking note of the allegations, the CVC acknowledged the seriousness of the complaint. The commission has assured that strict action will be taken based on the final investigation report. The CPWD has been instructed to provide a detailed analysis of the expenditures, approvals, and any violations of construction norms.
The findings of this investigation could have significant political and legal implications. As the probe progresses, all eyes are on the CVC’s final decision on this high-profile case.
