New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for 13 states, particularly in Northeast India, as a cyclonic circulation develops over the Bay of Bengal. The weather system is expected to bring intense showers and thunderstorms across Assam and its neighboring states.
According to IMD, a cyclonic wind area has formed over Nagaland and nearby regions at an altitude of 1.5 km above sea level. As a result, heavy to very heavy rainfall, along with snowfall in higher altitudes, is expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim between February 15 and February 21. Thunderstorms are predicted on February 19, with heavy downpours likely in Assam and Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh has already witnessed snowfall and heavy rains, signaling the impact of the evolving weather system.
Rainfall Expected in Northern and Western India
Apart from the Northeast, IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall in Rajasthan from February 17 to 19, while Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh are expected to experience intense showers on February 19 and 20. Sporadic to light rain and snowfall are also likely in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand due to a developing western disturbance.
On Saturday, Punjab recorded rainfall, offering relief to Rabi crop farmers in the region. Meanwhile, temperatures in North India, including Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, continue to rise despite sporadic showers in the hilly areas.
IMD has advised residents in affected regions to remain cautious and stay updated on weather alerts to mitigate any possible disruptions caused by the heavy rains.
