New Delhi: The Supreme Court has acquitted Gambhir Singh, who was sentenced to death for allegedly murdering six family members in 2012. The court blamed the Uttar Pradesh Police for a “casual and negligent” investigation.
Singh was accused of killing his brother, sister-in-law, and their four children over a property dispute in Agra. He was arrested along with a woman named Gayatri and a minor. In 2017, a trial court sentenced him to death but acquitted Gayatri. The Allahabad High Court upheld the ruling in 2019.
However, the Supreme Court found that the prosecution had failed to prove Singh’s motive. The court criticized the investigation, calling it “lackadaisical” and “full of holes.”
“No effort whatsoever was made to collect proper evidence,” the bench said while overturning the conviction.
Singh’s acquittal comes after 12 years in prison, raising serious concerns about police investigations and justice delivery.
