New Delhi: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned on Sunday. His resignation comes nearly two years after ethnic violence broke out in the state.
Singh handed over his resignation to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. The BJP government faces a possible no-confidence motion and a floor test.
“It has been an honour to serve the people of Manipur,” Singh wrote in his resignation letter. He thanked the central government for its support.
Singh resigned after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi. He returned to Manipur before submitting his resignation.
The BJP holds 32 seats in the 60-member Manipur Assembly. It also has support from five MLAs of the Naga People’s Front and six from JD(U). Despite losing support from Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party, the BJP still has a majority.
The Congress holds five seats. The opposition NPP has seven MLAs. There are also three Independent MLAs and two from the Kuki People’s Alliance.
The 7th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly is set to begin on Monday, February 10.
Manipur has been facing ethnic violence since May 2023. The violence has killed over 250 people and left thousands homeless.
A day before resigning, Singh said his government was making efforts to restore peace. “We are trying to ensure that people live together peacefully as before,” he said.
The political future of Manipur remains uncertain as the state waits for the next leadership decision.
