Salem: A government school teacher in Tamil Nadu’s Salem has been arrested for allegedly sexually harassing girl students. The accused, 37-year-old Ilaiyakannu, was a temporary science teacher. He taught students from Classes 6 to 10.
The incident came to light during an awareness program conducted by District Child Welfare (DCW) officials. During the session, students were encouraged to report any harassment. Around 12 girls stepped forward and accused Ilaiyakannu of sexual harassment.
A police complaint was immediately filed. An FIR was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Ilaiyakannu was suspended pending an inquiry.
District All Women Police Inspector Uma visited the school for an investigation. Soon after, the accused was arrested.
The incident took place at Government Eklavya School in Yercaud. The school accommodates students from tribal families from Karumathurai, Arthur, and Vazhapadi. The children both stay and study there.
Police have launched a further investigation into the case.
