Mumbai: Ratan Tata’s will has revealed a surprising beneficiary. His close aides were shocked to learn that a man named Mohini Mohan Dutta has been left a major share of his assets. Dutta will receive a third of the residual assets, estimated to be over Rs 500 crore.
Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Sons, passed away on October 10 in Mumbai. He was 86. His will has left the Tata family and business associates surprised.
Who is Mohini Mohan Dutta?
Dutta is an entrepreneur from Jamshedpur. His family owned the travel agency Stallion, which merged with Taj Services in 2013. The Tata Group owned a small stake in the company. One of Dutta’s daughters worked at Taj Hotels and later at Tata Trusts until 2024.
A Long Association
Dutta and Tata first met 60 years ago in Jamshedpur. They formed a close bond over the years. At Tata’s funeral in October, Dutta spoke about their deep friendship. “He helped me out and really built me up,” he said.
Dutta was also invited to Ratan Tata’s birth anniversary celebrations in December 2024. People close to Tata confirm that he was known to the family.
The unexpected mention of Dutta in the will has raised many questions. Tata stakeholders are now considering appointing an arbitrator to oversee the estate’s trusteeship.
