New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government has appointed senior IPS officer Parag Jain as the next chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India’s external intelligence agency. He will take over the post on July 1, replacing Ravi Sinha, whose tenure ends on June 30.
A Trusted Intelligence Veteran
Parag Jain is a 1989-batch IPS officer of the Punjab cadre. Known as a ‘super sleuth’ within intelligence circles, he has earned a reputation for being sharp, methodical, and discreet.
He is known for skillfully using both human intelligence (HUMINT) and technical intelligence (TECHINT). Officials say this mix was key in many successful operations.
Key Role in Operation Sindoor
Jain was a key figure behind the intelligence groundwork during Operation Sindoor in May.
His team’s inputs led to precision missile strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
While the strikes lasted minutes, the intelligence was built over years of secret planning and network-building.
Vast Experience in J&K
Parag Jain has worked extensively in Jammu and Kashmir, a region considered one of India’s toughest security zones.
His field experience is seen as crucial as India faces rising security challenges both regionally and globally.
Career Highlights
Promoted to Director General of Police (DGP) in Punjab in January 2021
Was on central deputation, so the DGP rank was notional
Has served in key foreign postings in Canada and Sri Lanka
Empanelled to hold central DGP-equivalent posts in national intelligence
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his name on June 28.
This ended days of speculation over who would succeed Ravi Sinha, the outgoing RAW chief known for his low-profile tenure.
With his sharp skills, international experience, and deep knowledge of India’s security environment, Parag Jain is expected to lead RAW through a critical and challenging period. His appointment signals continuity, expertise, and a focus on strengthening India’s external intelligence network.
