Jamnagar: In a monumental step toward strengthening India’s artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries is set to construct the world’s largest data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The ambitious project aligns with Reliance’s vision of accelerating AI-driven innovation in India and fostering self-reliance in cutting-edge technology.
According to Bloomberg News, Reliance is investing heavily in AI infrastructure and has entered into a strategic partnership with global AI leader Nvidia. This collaboration was first announced in September 2023, with both companies pledging to develop AI supercomputers and large language models (LLMs) tailored for India’s diverse linguistic landscape.
Nvidia has confirmed that it will provide its state-of-the-art Blackwell AI processors for the one-gigawatt data center Reliance is building. Speaking at the Nvidia AI Summit 2024, the company’s CEO, Jensen Huang, emphasized the importance of India’s AI autonomy, stating, “It makes complete sense that India should manufacture its own AI. You should not export data to import intelligence. India should not export flour to import bread.”
Mukesh Ambani echoed these sentiments, highlighting India’s strong digital infrastructure and the transformative power of AI. “We can use intelligence to actually bring prosperity to all the people and bring equality to the world…Apart from the US and China, India has the best digital connectivity infrastructure,” he stated.
Reliance’s move comes amid the Indian government’s strong push toward AI development. The government has allocated over Rs 10,000 crore to fund AI startups, research projects, and the creation of LLMs. This investment underscores India’s ambition to emerge as a global AI powerhouse, reducing its reliance on foreign technology and enhancing data security within its borders.
The upcoming AI data center in Jamnagar is expected to revolutionize India’s technological landscape, serving as a crucial hub for AI research, innovation, and industry growth. With Reliance and Nvidia leading the charge, India is well on its way to positioning itself as a dominant force in the AI sector, competing with global giants like the US and China.
As Reliance advances with its AI ambitions, this landmark project is anticipated to create thousands of jobs, boost India’s digital economy, and set the foundation for a new era of AI-driven progress. The world will be watching as India takes a bold step into the future of artificial intelligence.
