Ujjain: Ujjain, one of India’s most spiritually significant cities, has long been associated with a unique belief: no political leader, including Chief Ministers, can spend a night in the city without risking their power or position. This conviction stems from the idea that Lord Mahakal, a revered form of Lord Shiva, is the eternal ruler of Ujjain, leaving no room for another “king” to stay.
The tradition dates back to the time of Raja Bhoj and has been reinforced over the years by various incidents. Former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, for example, reportedly saw his government collapse soon after staying overnight in Ujjain. Similarly, former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa is said to have resigned within days of an accidental overnight stay in the city. Such stories have fueled a widespread superstition, compelling politicians to avoid staying in Ujjain overnight and instead opt for nearby cities like Indore.
However, in December 2023, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav defied this long-standing belief by staying overnight in Ujjain. As a resident of the city and a devoted follower of Lord Mahakal, Dr. Yadav dismissed the superstition. “Lord Mahakal is the King here. We are all his sons,” he stated, reframing his visit as that of a devotee rather than a ruler.
During his stay, Dr. Yadav received a warm welcome from the city’s residents and took the opportunity to inspect key development projects, including the road-widening initiative from KD Gate to Imli Bazaar. His visit highlighted his administration’s commitment to modernizing Ujjain while preserving its cultural and spiritual essence.
Ujjain’s significance has recently transcended its spiritual legacy, becoming a focal point in state politics. The redevelopment of the Mahakal Mahalok project, touted by the ruling BJP as a major achievement, has been criticized by the Congress for alleged corruption. This has further amplified the city’s prominence in the political landscape.
Dr. Yadav’s decision to challenge this age-old belief has sparked debate on whether it will inspire others to confront superstitions or further entrench the city’s mystical aura. For now, Ujjain remains a unique blend of history, spirituality, and politics, where the eternal presence of Lord Mahakal continues to captivate and command reverence.
