Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has set up a seven-member committee to examine legal measures against forced religious conversions and “love jihad.” The panel, led by state DGP Sanjay Verma, includes senior officials from key departments like law, minority affairs, and home.
The committee will study similar laws in other states and suggest ways to handle complaints related to forced conversions. A Government Resolution (GR) on Friday confirmed its formation.
The issue of “love jihad” has been raised by the ruling BJP-led coalition after the brutal murder of Shraddha Walkar in 2022. The government claims such cases are increasing and need strict action.
However, the move has sparked criticism from opposition leaders. NCP leader Supriya Sule called it a distraction from real issues like economic concerns. Congress and Samajwadi Party leaders dismissed “love jihad” as a myth and accused the BJP of spreading communalism.
BJP MLA Mangal Lodha defended the decision, stating that Maharashtra has seen many such cases. The committee’s recommendations will determine the next steps for a possible new law.
