Heat Wave Alert: Essential Do’s and Don’ts to Stay Safe

Bhubaneswar: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), under the Government of India, has issued crucial guidelines to safeguard individuals from heat-related illnesses, including heat strokes, which can be fatal if not addressed promptly. With rising temperatures and the increasing frequency of heat wave conditions, health experts and authorities emphasize the importance of following these preventive measures.

According to meteorological reports, the mercury is soaring, posing serious risks to public health. To minimize the impact of extreme heat and prevent serious ailments or fatalities due to heat strokes, residents are advised to follow essential safety measures.

Precautionary Measures to Beat the Heat:
– Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, particularly between 12:00 noon and 3:00 p.m.
– Stay hydrated by drinking sufficient water regularly, even if not thirsty.
– Wear lightweight, loose, and light-coloured cotton clothing. Protective gear such as sunglasses, umbrellas, hats, and appropriate footwear can provide additional protection.
– Restrict strenuous activities when outdoor temperatures are high, particularly during peak afternoon hours.
– Always carry a water bottle while travelling to stay hydrated.
– Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated beverages, as they contribute to dehydration.
– Maintain a balanced diet, avoiding high-protein meals and stale food.
– Those working outdoors should use a hat or umbrella and frequently dampen their head, neck, face, and limbs with a wet cloth to regulate body temperature.
– Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
– If symptoms of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness or nausea, appear, seek medical attention immediately.
– Consume rehydrating drinks like Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), lassi, lemon water, buttermilk, or torani (rice water) to restore hydration levels.
– Keep pets and livestock in shaded areas and ensure they have access to clean drinking water.
– Maintain a cool indoor environment by using curtains, shutters, and sunshades while allowing ventilation at night.
– Utilize fans, take frequent cool showers, and use damp clothing to lower body temperature.

Emergency Response for Heat Stroke Victims:
– Move the affected person to a cool, shaded area immediately.
– Wipe the body with a wet cloth or frequently pour normal-temperature water over the head to lower body heat.
– Encourage fluid intake, such as ORS, torani, or lemon-based drinks, to rehydrate.
– Seek immediate medical assistance by rushing the person to the nearest healthcare facility, as heat strokes can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

With the temperature expected to remain high in the coming weeks, authorities urge citizens to remain vigilant and adopt these preventive measures to safeguard their health and well-being. Community awareness and timely precautions can help mitigate the adverse effects of heat waves and save lives.
